They help with the impact of falls + if the horse falls on you (yes it happens a LOT). this one is really emmmm its useful for SURE, but not the top. Its WAY better than nothing, but the one I want (for my bd in december) is 600$+ and has a spine protector and everything. A life investment, literally. This one is 80$ + 26$ shipping + what OF takes and that would make me very happy for now. REALLY happy
